Context of Acts 15:12
10Now then, why are you testing God by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we have been able to endure? 11But we believe that we are saved through the [precious, undeserved] grace of the Lord Jesus [which makes us free of the guilt of sin and grants us eternal life], in just the same way as they are.” All the people remained silent, and they listened [attentively] to Barnabas and Paul as they described all the signs and wonders (attesting miracles) that God had done through them among the Gentiles. 13When they had finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. 14Simeon (Simon Peter) has described how God first concerned Himself about taking from among the Gentiles a people for His name [to honor Him and be identified with Him].

Commentaries on Acts 15:12
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12All the multitude kept silence - The strong facts stated by St. Peter could not be controverted. His speech may be thus analyzed: Circumcision is a sign of the purification of the heart. That purification can only be effected by the Holy Ghost. This Holy Spirit was hitherto supposed to be the portion of those only who had received circumcision. But the Gentiles, who were never circumcised, nor kept any part of the law of Moses, have had their hearts…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12Then all the multitude - Evidently the multitude of private Christians who were assembled on this occasion. That it does not refer to a synod of ministers and elders merely is apparent: (1) Because the church, the brethren, are represented as having been present, and as concurring in the final opinion Acts 15:22-23; and, (2) Because the word “multitude” ̀ ͂ to plēthoswould not have been used in describing the collection of apostles and elders merely…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-21Verses 7-21 We see from the words "purifying their hearts by faith," and the address of St. Peter, that justification by faith, and sanctification by the Holy Ghost, cannot be separated; and that both are the gift of God. We have great cause to bless God that we have heard the gospel. May we have that faith which the great Searcher of hearts approves, and attests by the seal of the Holy Spirit. Then our hearts and consciences will be purified from the…Read the comment

Then all ... gave audience to Barnabas and Paul--On this order of the names here, see on Ac 15:25. declaring what miracles and signs God wrought among the Gentiles by them--This detail of facts, immediately following up those which Peter had recalled to mind, would lead all who waited only for divine teaching to see that God had Himself pronounced the Gentile converts to be disciples in as full standing as the Jews, without circumcision; and the…Read the comment
