Context of Romans 9:2
1I tell the truth in Messiah—I do not lie, my conscience assuring me in the Ruach ha-Kodesh— that my sorrow is great and the anguish in my heart unending. 3For I would pray that I myself were cursed, banished from Messiah for the sake of my people—my own flesh and blood, 4who are Israelites. To them belong the adoption and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Torah and the Temple service and the promises.

Commentaries on Romans 9:2
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3Paul does not clearly explain why he feels such deep sorrow for his Jewish brothers and sisters. However, he says that he would be willing to be cursed for their sake if it would save them. This shows that his pain comes from the fact that most Jews did not accept Jesus and be saved (see also 10:1).Read the comment

I say the truth in Christ--as if steeped in the spirit of Him who wept over impenitent and doomed Jerusalem (compare Ro 1:9; 2Co 12:19; Php 1:8). my conscience bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost--"my…Read the comment
- Calvin’s Commentaries · v. 22. That I have great sorrow, etc. He dexterously manages so to cut short his sentence as not yet to express what he was going to say; for it was not as yet seasonable openly to mention the destruction of the Jewish nation. It may be added, that he thus intimates a greater measure of sorrow, as imperfect sentences are for the most part full of pathos. But he will presently express the cause of his sorrow, after having more fully testified his sincerity…Read the comment
