Context of Romans 9:2
1As a Christian, I’m telling you the truth. I’m not lying. The Holy Spirit, along with my own thoughts, supports me in this. I have deep sorrow and endless heartache. 3I wish I could be condemned and cut off from Christ for the sake of others who, like me, are Jewish by birth. 4They are Israelites, God’s adopted children. They have the Lord’s glory, the pledges, Moses’ Teachings, the true worship, and the promises.

Commentaries on Romans 9:2
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3Paul does not clearly explain why he feels such deep sorrow for his Jewish brothers and sisters. However, he says that he would be willing to be cursed for their sake if it would save them. This shows that his pain comes from the fact that most Jews did not accept Jesus and be saved (see also 10:1).Read the comment

- Calvin’s Commentaries · v. 22. That I have great sorrow, etc. He dexterously manages so to cut short his sentence as not yet to express what he was going to say; for it was not as yet seasonable openly to mention the destruction of the Jewish nation. It may be added, that he thus intimates a greater measure of sorrow, as imperfect sentences are for the most part full of pathos. But he will presently express the cause of his sorrow, after having more fully testified his sincerity…Read the comment
