Context of Matthew 8:27

25So they came and woke Him up, saying, “Master, save us! We’re perishing!” 26He said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became totally calm. The men were amazed, saying, “What kind of person is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!” 28When He came to the other side, into the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-plagued men coming from the graveyard met Him. They were so violent that no one could pass by that way. 29And they screamed, “What’s between You and us, Ben-Elohim? Have You come here to torment us, before the appointed time?”

Commentaries on Matthew 8:27

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27The men marvelled - Every part of the creation (man excepted) hears and obeys the Creator's voice. Sinners have an ear for the world, the devil, and the flesh: till this ear is shut, God's voice is not discerned; for when it is shut to its enemies it is open to its friends. What manner of man is this - Ϛ , How great is this person! Here was God fully manifest; but it was in the flesh - there were the hidings of his power.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27The men marveled - Wondered, or were amazed. What manner of man - What kind of a personage. How unlike other men! What a vast display of power! and how far exalted above mortals must he be! Jesus spake to the winds; rebuked their raging, and the sea was suddenly calm. The storm subsided; the ship glided smoothly; danger fled; and in amazement they stood in the presence of him who controlled the tempests that God had raised; and they felt that “he” must be…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-27Verses 23-27 It is a comfort to those who go down to the sea in ships, and are often in perils there, to reflect that they have a Saviour to trust in and pray to, who knows what it is to be on the water, and to be in storms there. Those who are passing with Christ over the ocean of this world, must expect storms. His human nature, like to ours in every thing but sin, was wearied, and he slept at this time to try the faith of his disciples. They, in their…Read the comment
