Context of 2 Corinthians 11:4
2For I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy. For I betrothed you to one husband, to present you to Messiah as a pure virgin. 3But I am afraid that somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your minds might be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion and purity to the Messiah. For if someone comes and proclaims another Yeshua whom we did not proclaim, or if you receive a different spirit that you did not receive, or a different “good news” that you did not accept, you put up with that well enough! 5For I consider myself in no way inferior to the “super special” emissaries. 6Even if I am unskilled in speech, yet I am not so in knowledge. No, in every way we have made this clear to you in all things.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4For if he that cometh - The false apostle, who came after St. Paul had left Corinth. Preacheth another Jesus - Who can save more fully and more powerfully than that Jesus whom I have preached. Or if ye receive another spirit - And if in consequence of believing in this new saviour ye receive another spirit, the gifts, graces, and consolations of which are greater than those which ye have received from the Holy Ghost, which has been given to you on your…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4For if he that cometh - There is much difficulty in this verse in ascertaining the true sense, and expositors have been greatly perplexed and divided in opinion, especially with regard to the true sense of the last clause, “ye might well bear with him.” It is difficult to ascertain whether Paul meant to speak ironically or seriously; and different views will prevail as different views are taken of the design. If it be supposed that he meant to speak…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4The false missionaries in Corinth preached about a different Jesus, a different kind of Spirit, and a different gospel than the one the Corinthians believed. It is hard to know exactly what these false teachers preached. Most likely, they promoted a powerful, dominant Christ and ignored the suffering of the cross. They probably saw themselves as powerful preachers, free from hardship and trial. In contrast, Paul’s message focused on Christ crucified…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. if, &c.--which in fact is impossible. However, if it were possible, ye might then bear with them (see on 2Co 11:1). But there can be no new Gospel; there is but the one which I first preached; therefore it ought not to be "borne" by you, that the false teachers should attempt to supersede me. he that cometh--the high-sounding title assumed by the false teachers, who arrogated Christ's own peculiar title (Greek, Mt 11:3, and He 10:37), "He that is…Read the comment
