Context of Matthew 28:18

16Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority is given to me in heaven and upon earth. 19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen.

Commentaries on Matthew 28:18

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18And Jesus came and spake unto them - It is supposed by some that the reason why any doubted was, that when they saw Jesus at first, he was at a distance; but when he came up, drew near to them, they were fully persuaded of the identity of his person. All power is given unto me - Or, All authority in heaven and upon earth is given unto me. One fruit of the sufferings and resurrection of Christ is represented to be, his having authority or right in heaven…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth - The “Son of God,” as “Creator,” had an original right to all things, to control them and dispose of them. See John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:8. But the universe is put under him more particularly as Mediator, that he might redeem his people; that he might gather a church; that he might defend his chosen; that he might subdue all their enemies, and bring them off conquerors and more than…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-20Verses 16-20 This evangelist passes over other appearances of Christ, recorded by Luke and John, and hastens to the most solemn; one appointed before his death, and after his resurrection. But Christ gave such convincing proofs of his resurrection, as made their faith to triumph over doubts. He now solemnly commissioned the…Read the comment

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee--but certainly not before the second week after the resurrection, and probably somewhat later. into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them--It should have been rendered "the mountain," meaning some certain mountain which He had named to them--probably the night before He suffered, when He said, "After I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee" (Mt 26:32; Mr 14:28).
