Context of Mark 2:27
25And he said to them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, he, and they that were with him? 26How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them who were with him? And he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27The Sabbath was made for man - That he might have the seventh part of his whole time to devote to the purposes of bodily rest and spiritual exercises. And in these respects it is of infinite use to mankind. Where no Sabbath is observed, there disease, poverty, and profligacy, generally prevail. Had we no Sabbath, we should soon have no religion. This whole verse is wanting in the Codex Bezae, and in five of the Itala.Read the comment

The word “corn,” in the Bible, refers only to grain of that kind, and never to “maize” or “Indian corn.” To pluck the ears of corn - They were hungry, Matthew 12:1. They therefore gathered the wheat or barley as they walked and rubbed it in their hands to shell it, and thus to satisfy their appetite. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-28Verses 23-28 The sabbath is a sacred and Divine institution; a privilege and benefit, not a task and drudgery. God never designed it to be a burden to us, therefore we must not make it so to ourselves. The sabbath was instituted for the good of mankind, as living in society, having many wants and troubles, preparing for a state of happiness or misery. Man was not made for the sabbath, as if his keeping it could be of service to God, nor was he commanded…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-28Since Jesus is the Lord of humanity (1 Corinthians 15:25–28; Ephesians 1:20–22; Philippians 2:9–11) and since the Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, Jesus is Lord even of the Sabbath. Like when Jesus claimed authority to forgive sins, this also showed that he claimed authority that belongs to God (Mark 2:7).Read the comment
