Context of John 13:18
16Verily, verily, I say to you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. 19Now I tell you before it cometh, that, when it hath come to pass, ye may believe that I am he . 20Verily, verily, I say to you, He that receiveth whomever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Commentaries on John 13:18
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18I speak not of you all - This is a continuation of that discourse which was left off at the tenth verse. The preceding verses may be read in a parenthesis. I know whom I have chosen - I am not deceived in my choice; I perfectly foresaw every thing that has happened, or can happen. I have chosen Judas, not as a wicked man, nor that he should become such; but I plainly foresaw that he would abuse my bounty, give way to iniquity, deliver me into the hands of…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18I speak not of you all - That is, in addressing you as clean, I do not mean to say that you all possess this character. I know whom I have chosen - He here means evidently to say that he had not chosen them all, implying that Judas had not been chosen. As, however, this word is applied to Judas in one place John 6:70, “Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?” it must have a different meaning here from that which it has there. There it…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-30Verses 18-30 Our Lord had often spoken of his own sufferings and death, without such trouble of spirit as he now discovered when he spake of Judas. The sins of Christians are the grief of Christ. We are not to confine our attention to Judas. The prophecy of his treachery may apply to all who partake of God's mercies, and meet them with ingratitude. See the infidel, who only looks at the Scriptures with a desire to do away their authority and destroy their…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18I am not speaking about all of you: This is the third time Jesus mentions that Judas will betray him (13:2, 11). This matter deeply "troubled" Jesus (13:21). I know whom I have chosen: This does not mean Jesus only chose the 11 disciples and excluded Judas. Jesus chose Judas and gave him every opportunity to believe. He realized that Judas had chosen the darkness instead of the light (6:70). The one who shares My bread has lifted up his heel against Me…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 18-1918-19. I speak not of you all--the "happy are ye," of Joh 13:17, being on no supposition applicable to Judas. I know whom I have chosen--in the higher sense. But that the scripture may be fulfilled--that is, one has been added to your number, by no accident or mistake, who is none of Mine, but just that he might fulfil his predicted destiny. He that eateth bread with me--"did eat of my bread" (Psa 41:9), as one of My family; admitted to the nearest…Read the comment
