Context of John 12:28

26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. 27Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause I came to this hour. Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. 29The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spoke to him. 30Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

Commentaries on John 12:28

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28Father, glorify thy name - By the name of God is to be understood himself, in all his attributes: his wisdom, truth, mercy, justice, holiness, etc., which were all more abundantly glorified by Christ's death and resurrection, (i.e. shown forth in their own excellence), than they had ever been before. Christ teaches here a lesson of submission to the Divine will. Do with me what thou wilt, so that glory may redound to thy name. Some MSS. read, Father…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28Glorify thy name - The meaning of this expression in this connection is this: “I am willing to bear any trials; I will not shrink from any sufferings. Let thy name be honored. Let thy character, wisdom, goodness, and plans of mercy be manifested and promoted, whatever sufferings it may cost me.” Thus Jesus showed us that God‘s glory is to be the great end of our conduct, and that we are to seek that, whatever sufferings it may cost us. I have both…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-33Verses 27-33 The sin of our souls was the troubled of Christ's soul, when he undertook to redeem and save us, and to make his soul an offering for our sin. Christ was willing to suffer, yet prayed to be saved from suffering. Prayer against trouble may well agree with patience under it, and submission to the will of God in it. Our Lord Jesus undertook to satisfy God's injured honour, and he did it by humbling himself. The voice of the Father from heaven…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 28A voice came from heaven: Compare Matthew 3:17; 17:5; Mark 1:11; 9:7; Luke 3:22; 9:35. God had already brought glory to himself when Christ entered the world, and through the work of Jesus. This showed God's power to the world (John 1:14). I will glorify it again: The final display of glory would come at the cross (see 12:23; 17:1). In John's Gospel, the cross is an event of glory as Christ was "lifted up" and glorified there (12:32). Jesus was prepared…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 27-2827-28. Now is my soul troubled--He means at the prospect of His death, just alluded to. Strange view of the Cross this, immediately after representing it as the hour of His glory! (Joh 12:23). But the two views naturally meet, and blend into one. It was the Greeks, one might say, that troubled Him. Ah! they shall see Jesus, but to Him it shall be a costly sight. and what shall I say?--He is in a strait betwixt two. The death of the cross was, and could…Read the comment
