Context of 1 John 5:14

12He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13These things have I written to you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15And if we know that he heareth us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired from him. 16If any man shall see his brother sin a sin which is not to death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not to death. There is a sin to death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14This is the confidence - ̔, The liberty of access and speech, that if we ask any thing according to his will, that is, which he has promised in his word. His word is a revelation of his will, in the things which concern the salvation of man. All that God has promised we are justified in expecting; and what he has promised, and we expect, we should pray for. Prayer is the language of the children of God. He who is begotten of God speaks this language. He…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14And this is the confidence that we have in him - Margin, “concerning.” Greek, “toward him,” or in respect to him - ̀ ̓̀ pros autonThe confidence referred to here is that which relates to the answer to prayer. The apostle does not say that this is the only thing in respect to which there is to be confidence in him, but that it is one which is worthy of special consideration. The sense is, that one of the effects of believing on the Lord Jesus 1 John 5:13…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-17Verses 13-17 Upon all this evidence, it is but right that we believe on the name of the Son of God. In so far as God's will is not our will, we are not abiding in faith, and our prayers are not accepted.
