Ezra 5
Revised Version 1895
1Now the prophets, HaggaiH2292 the prophet, and ZechariahH2148 the sonH1247 of IddoH5714, prophesiedH5013 unto the JewsH3062 that were in JudahH3061 and JerusalemH3390; in the nameH8036 of the GodH426 of IsraelH3479 prophesiedH5013 they unto them. 2Then rose up ZerubbabelH2217 the sonH1247 of ShealtielH7598, and JeshuaH3443 the sonH1247 of Jozadak, and beganH8271 to build the houseH1005 of GodH426 whichH1768 is at JerusalemH3390; and with them were the prophetsH5029 of GodH426, helping them. 3At the same time cameH858 to them TattenaiH8674, the governorH6347 beyondH5675 the riverH5103, and Shethar-bonzenai, and their companions, and saidH560 thusH3652 to them, Who gaveH560 youH5922 a decreeH2942 to build this houseH1005, and to finishH3635 this wall? 4Then spake weH116 unto them after this manner, WhatH4479 are the namesH8036 of the menH1400 that make this buildingH1124? 5But the eye of their GodH426 was upon the eldersH7868 of the JewsH3062, and they did notH3809 make them ceaseH989, till the matter should come to DariusH1868, and then answer should be returnedH8421 by letter concerning it. 6The copyH6573 of the letterH104 that TattenaiH8674, the governorH6347 beyondH5675 the riverH5103, and Shethar-bozenaiH8370, and his companions the Apharsachites, whichH1768 were beyondH5675 the riverH5103, sentH7972 unto DariusH1868 the kingH4430: 7they sentH7972 a letter unto him, wherein was writtenH3790 thusH1836; Unto DariusH1868 the kingH4430, allH3606 peaceH8001. 8Be it knownH3046 unto the kingH4430, that weH1768 wentH236 into the provinceH4083 of JudahH3061, to the houseH1005 of the greatH7229 GodH426, whichH1768 is builded with greatH7229 stonesH69, and timberH636 is laidH7761 in the wallsH3797, and this workH5673 goeth on with diligenceH629 and prospereth in their handsH3028. 9Then askedH7593 weH116 thoseH479 eldersH7868, and saidH560 unto them thusH1836, Who gaveH560 you a decreeH2942 to build this houseH1005, and to finishH3635 this wall? 10WeH1768 askedH7593 them their namesH8036 also, to certify thee, that weH1768 might writeH3790 the namesH8036 of the menH1400 that were at the headH7217 of them. 11And thusH1836 they returnedH8421 usH5649 answerH6600, sayingH560, WeH586 are the servantsH5649 of the GodH426 of heavenH8065 and earthH772, and build the houseH1005 that was builded theseH1836 manyH7690 yearsH8140 agoH6928, whichH1768 a greatH7229 kingH4430 of IsraelH3479 builded and finishedH3635. 12But afterH4481 that our fathersH2 had provokedH7265 the GodH426 of heavenH8065 unto wrathH7265, he gaveH3052 them into the handH3028 of NebuchadnezzarH5020 kingH4430 of BabylonH895, the Chaldean, who destroyed this houseH1005, and carried the peopleH5972 away into BabylonH895. 13But in the firstH2298 yearH8140 of CyrusH3567 kingH4430 of BabylonH895, CyrusH3567 the kingH4430 madeH7761 a decreeH2942 to build this houseH1005 of GodH426. 14And the goldH1722 and sliver vesselsH3984 also of the houseH1005 of GodH426, whichH1768 NebuchadnezzarH5020 tookH5312 out of the templeH1005 that was in JerusalemH3390, and broughtH2987 them into the templeH1005 of BabylonH895, thoseH1768 did CyrusH3567 the kingH4430 take out of the templeH1005 of BabylonH895, and they were delivered unto one whoseH1768 nameH8036 was SheshbazzarH8340, whomH1768 he had madeH7761 governorH6347; 15and he saidH560 unto him, TakeH5376 theseH412 vesselsH3984, goH236, putH5182 them in the templeH1005 that is in JerusalemH3390, and let the houseH1005 of GodH426 be builded in its placeH870. 16Then cameH858 the same SheshbazzarH8340, and laidH3052 the foundationsH787 of the houseH1005 of GodH426 whichH1768 is in JerusalemH3390: and sinceH1768 that time evenH1768 untilH5705 nowH3705 hath it been in buildingH1124, and yet it is notH3809 completedH8000. 17NowH3705 therefore, ifH2006 it seem good to the kingH4430, letH3705 there be searchH1240 madeH1240 in the king’sH4430 treasureH1596 houseH1005, whichH1768 is there at BabylonH895, whetherH2006 it be soH1768, that a decreeH2942 was madeH1240 of CyrusH3567 the kingH4430 to build this houseH1005 of GodH426 at JerusalemH3390, and letH3705 the kingH4430 sendH7972 his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
