Context of Acts 1:7

5For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within his own authority. 8But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9And when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

Commentaries on Acts 1:7

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7The times or the seasons - . Times here may signify any large portion of a period, era, or century - such as an Olympiad, lustrum or year; and seasons, the particular part, season, or opportunity in that period, etc., in which it might be proper to do any particular work. God has not only fixed the great periods in which he will bring about those great revolutions which his wisdom, justice, and mercy have designed, but he leaves himself at full liberty to…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7It is not for you to know - The question of the apostles respected the time of the restoration; it was not whether he would do it. Accordingly, his answer meets precisely their inquiry; and he tells them in general that the time of the great events of God‘s kingdom was not to be understood by them. They had asked a similar question on a former occasion, Matthew 24:3, “Tell us when shall these things be?” Jesus had answered them then by showing them that…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-11Verses 6-11 They were earnest in asking about that which their Master never had directed or encouraged them to seek. Our Lord knew that his ascension and the teaching of the Holy Spirit would soon end these expectations, and therefore only gave them a rebuke; but it is a caution to his church in all ages, to take heed of a desire of forbidden knowledge. He had given his disciples instructions for the discharge of their duty, both before his death and…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-11He was taken up: Jesus ascended into heaven (see also Luke 24:50–53). This happened on the Mount of Olives (Acts 1:12; Luke 24:50). This was the last physical appearance of Jesus. He ascended into heaven, where he will stay "until the time comes for the restoration of all things" (Acts 3:21).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-86-8. wilt thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?--Doubtless their carnal views of Messiah's kingdom had by this time been modified, though how far it is impossible to say. But, as they plainly looked for some restoration of the kingdom to Israel, so they are neither rebuked nor contradicted on this point.Read the comment
