Context of Revelation 3:21

19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the Assemblies.

Commentaries on Revelation 3:21

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21To sit with me in my throne - In every case it is to him that overcometh, to the conqueror, that the final promise is made. He that conquers not is not crowned, therefore every promise is here made to him that is faithful unto death. Here is a most remarkable expression: Jesus has conquered, and is set down with the Father upon the Father's throne; he who conquers through Christ sits down with Christ upon his throne: but Christ's throne and the throne of…Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-22Verses 14-22 Laodicea was the last and worst of the seven churches of Asia. Here our Lord Jesus styles himself, "The Amen;" one steady and unchangeable in all his purposes and promises. If religion is worth anything, it is worth every thing. Christ expects men should be in earnest. How many professors of gospel doctrine are neither hot nor cold; except as they are indifferent in needful matters, and hot and fiery in disputes about things of lesser moment!…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21The reward for faith that is victorious and obedient is to sit with Christ on his throne. This picture shows great honor and closeness to Christ. It means that believers will share in his authority when he rules over the new creation. This reward does not mean that Christians become divine. Only God is divine. Instead, Christians share in Christ’s victory and in the work he gives them in his kingdom (Revelation 20:4, 6; 22:5; Colossians 3:1–4; 2 Timothy…Read the comment
