Context of Revelation 3:21
19Those whom I [dearly and tenderly] love, I rebuke and discipline [showing them their faults and instructing them]; so be enthusiastic and repent [change your inner self—your old way of thinking, your sinful behavior—seek God’s will]. 20Behold, I stand at the door [of the church] and continually knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him (restore him), and he with Me. He who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God], I will grant to him [the privilege] to sit beside Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down beside My Father on His throne. 22He who has an ear, let him hear and heed what the Spirit says to the churches.’ ”

Commentaries on Revelation 3:21
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21To sit with me in my throne - In every case it is to him that overcometh, to the conqueror, that the final promise is made. He that conquers not is not crowned, therefore every promise is here made to him that is faithful unto death. Here is a most remarkable expression: Jesus has conquered, and is set down with the Father upon the Father's throne; he who conquers through Christ sits down with Christ upon his throne: but Christ's throne and the throne of…Read the comment

See the notes on Revelation 2:26-27; compare the notes on Romans 8:17. Even as I also overcame - As I gained a victory over the world, and over the power of the tempter. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-22Verses 14-22 Laodicea was the last and worst of the seven churches of Asia. Here our Lord Jesus styles himself, "The Amen;" one steady and unchangeable in all his purposes and promises. If religion is worth anything, it is worth every thing. Christ expects men should be in earnest. How many professors of gospel doctrine are neither hot nor cold; except as they are indifferent in needful matters, and hot and fiery in disputes about things of lesser moment!…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21The reward for faith that is victorious and obedient is to sit with Christ on his throne. This picture shows great honor and closeness to Christ. It means that believers will share in his authority when he rules over the new creation. This reward does not mean that Christians become divine. Only God is divine. Instead, Christians share in Christ’s victory and in the work he gives them in his kingdom (Revelation 20:4, 6; 22:5; Colossians 3:1–4; 2 Timothy…Read the comment
