Context of Luke 24:16

14And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. 17And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? 18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Their eyes were holden - It does not appear that there was any thing supernatural here, for the reason why these persons (who were not apostles, see Luke 24:33;) did not recollect our Lord is given by Mark, Mark 16:12, who says that Christ appeared to them in another form.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16Their eyes were holden - This expression is used merely to denote that they did not “know” who he was. It does not appear that there was anything supernatural or miraculous in it, or that God used any power to blind them. It may easily be accounted for without any such supposition; for, 1.Jesus appeared “in another form” Mark 16:12 - that is, different from his “usual” appearance. 2.They were not “expecting” to see him - indeed, they did not suppose that…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-27Verses 13-27 This appearance of Jesus to the two disciples going to Emmaus, happened the same day that he rose from the dead. It well becomes the disciples of Christ to talk together of his death and resurrection; thus they may improve one another's knowledge, refresh one another's memory, and stir up each other's devout affections. And where but two together are well employed in work of that kind, he will come to them, and make a third. Those who seek…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16were kept from recognizing Him: The Greek text uses a passive construction here. This is called a “divine passive” (a way of speaking that shows God is acting, even when God is not named). So here, even though the sentence does not name God as the one acting, the meaning is that God is the one who prevented them from recognizing Jesus. God chose not to let them see who he was until the moment he revealed himself, when Jesus broke bread with them…Read the comment
