Context of Matthew 27:9
7After some discussion they finally decided to buy the potter’s field, and they made it into a cemetery for foreigners. 8That is why the field is still called the Field of Blood. This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah that says, “They took the thirty pieces of silver— the price at which he was valued by the people of Israel, 10and purchased the potter’s field, as the Lord directed.” 11Now Jesus was standing before Pilate, the Roman governor. “Are you the king of the Jews?” the governor asked him. Jesus replied, “You have said it.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Jeremy the prophet - The words quoted here are not found in the Prophet Jeremiah, but in Zechariah 11:13. But St. Jerome says that a Hebrew of the sect of the Nazarenes showed him this prophecy in a Hebrew apocryphal copy of Jeremiah; but probably they were inserted there only to countenance the quotation here. One of Colbert's, a MS. of the eleventh century, has , Zechariah; so has the later Syriac in the margin, and a copy of the Arabic quoted by…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Spoken by Jeremy the prophet - The words quoted here are not to be found in the prophecy of Jeremiah. Words similar to these are recorded in Zechariah 11:12-13, and from that place this quotation has been doubtless made. Much difficulty has been experienced in explaining this quotation. In ancient times, according to the Jewish writers; “Jeremiah” was reckoned the first of the prophets, and was placed first in the “Book of the Prophets,” thus: Jeremiah…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: The quote is from Zechariah 11:12–13. Matthew might have followed the Jewish tradition of naming books by the first book in the scroll. In this case, Jeremiah would be the first book in the scroll containing Zechariah. Or, Matthew might be referencing similar passages in Jeremiah (Jeremiah 19:1–13; 18:2–6; 32:6–15) along with Zechariah 11:12–13. Matthew notices a strong similarity between…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying--(Zec 11:12, 13). Never was a complicated prophecy, otherwise hopelessly dark, more marvellously fulfilled. Various conjectures have been formed to account for Matthew's ascribing to Jeremiah a prophecy found in the book of Zechariah. But since with this book he was plainly familiar, having quoted one of its most remarkable prophecies of Christ but a few chapters before (Mt 21:4…Read the comment
