Context of Mark 1:2
1This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. It began just as the prophet Isaiah had written: “Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way. 3He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’” 4This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

Commentaries on Mark 1:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2As it is written in the prophets - Rather, As it is written by Isaiah the prophet. I think this reading should be adopted, instead of that in the common text. It is the reading of the Codex Bezae, Vatican, and several other MSS. of great repute. It is found also in the Syriac, Persic, Coptic, Armenian, Gothic, Vulgate, and Itala versions, and in several of the fathers. As this prophecy is found both in Isaiah and Malachi, probably the reading was changed…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2As it is written in the prophets - Mark mentions “prophets” here without specifying which. The places are found in Malachi 3:1, and in Isaiah 41:3. See the notes at Matthew 3:3.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3Mark includes Old Testament prophecies (messages from God given long ago) to support his account of the good news about Jesus Christ. John the Baptist’s role as a prophet and messenger shows that Jesus is the promised Lord and king. He is the Christ (or Messiah, God’s chosen one) and the Son of God. Isaiah: Mark follows the Jewish practice of mentioning only the best-known source in a quotation. Here he names Isaiah, even though the quotation also…Read the comment
