Context of John 7:29
27But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from.” 28While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he called out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I come from. But I’m not here on my own. The one who sent me is true, and you don’t know him. But I know him because I come from him, and he sent me to you.” 30Then the leaders tried to arrest him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. 31Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in him. “After all,” they said, “would you expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man has done?”

Commentaries on John 7:29
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29But I know him: for I am from him - Instead of ̓̀, I am, some editions, the Syriac Hieros. read ̔͂, I came, according to the Attics. Nonnus confirms this reading by paraphrasing the word by , I came. As the difference between the two words lies only in the accents, and as these are not found in ancient MSS., it is uncertain which way the word was understood by them: nor is the matter of much moment; both words amount nearly to the same meaning and ̔͂, I…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-30Verses 25-30 Christ proclaimed aloud, that they were in error in their thoughts about his origin. He was sent of God, who showed himself true to his promises. This declaration, that they knew not God, with his claim to peculiar knowledge, provoked the hearers; and they sought to take him, but God can tie men's hands, though he does not turn their hearts.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29I am from Him: Instead of answering questions about where he grew up (7:27, 40–44), Jesus spoke about where he truly came from. He pointed to his heavenly origin. He said that he was sent by God. This was a bold claim. The religious leaders understood what he meant. Because of this, they tried to arrest him. They believed he was speaking in a way that dishonored God (7:30; compare 10:30–33).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 28-2928-29. cried Jesus--in a louder tone, and more solemn, witnessing style than usual. Ye both, &c.--that is, "Yes, ye know both Myself and My local parentage, and (yet) I am not come of Myself." but he that sent me is true, &c.--Probably the meaning is, "He that sent Me is the only real Sender of any one."Read the comment
