Context of John 4:44
42Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.” 43At the end of the two days, Jesus went on to Galilee. He himself had said that a prophet is not honored in his own hometown. 45Yet the Galileans welcomed him, for they had been in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration and had seen everything he did there. 46As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44For Jesus himself testified - See the notes at Matthew 13:57. The connection of this verse with the preceding may be thus explained: “Jesus went to Galilee, but not to Nazareth, for he testified,” etc. Or, “Jesus went to Galilee, although‘ he had said that a prophet had no honor in his own country; yet, because he foreknew that the Galileans would many of them believe on him, he went at this time.”Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-54Verses 43-54 The father was a nobleman, yet the son was sick. Honours and titles are no security from sickness and death. The greatest men must go themselves to God, must become beggars. The nobleman did not stop from his request till he prevailed. But at first he discovered the weakness of his faith in the power of Christ. It is hard to persuade ourselves that distance of time and place, are no hinderance to the knowledge, mercy, and power of our Lord…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44-45Unlike many people in Jerusalem, the Galileans welcomed Jesus when he came to them. However, their welcome was based on amazement at his miracles (see 2:23–25). They were impressed by what he did. This response was not yet true faith. True faith trusts in who Jesus is, not only in the signs and wonders he performs.Read the comment
