Context of John 4:44
42The people said to the woman, ‘Now we believe in him because we ourselves have heard him. We do not believe only because of what you told us. He really is the man that God has sent to save the world. We know that now.’ 43After those two days in Samaria, Jesus left there and he went to Galilee. Jesus himself had said earlier, ‘When a prophet of God visits his own town, the people there will not accept him.’ 45When he arrived in Galilee, the people there were happy to see him. They had been in Jerusalem at the Passover festival too. They had seen all the things that Jesus had done there. 46Jesus visited Cana again. This was the town in Galilee where he had changed the water into wine. A certain man who was one of the king's officers was there. This officer had a son who was at his home in Capernaum. His son was very ill.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44For Jesus himself testified - See the notes at Matthew 13:57. The connection of this verse with the preceding may be thus explained: “Jesus went to Galilee, but not to Nazareth, for he testified,” etc. Or, “Jesus went to Galilee, although‘ he had said that a prophet had no honor in his own country; yet, because he foreknew that the Galileans would many of them believe on him, he went at this time.”Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-54Verses 43-54 The father was a nobleman, yet the son was sick. Honours and titles are no security from sickness and death. The greatest men must go themselves to God, must become beggars. The nobleman did not stop from his request till he prevailed. But at first he discovered the weakness of his faith in the power of Christ. It is hard to persuade ourselves that distance of time and place, are no hinderance to the knowledge, mercy, and power of our Lord…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44-45Unlike many people in Jerusalem, the Galileans welcomed Jesus when he came to them. However, their welcome was based on amazement at his miracles (see 2:23–25). They were impressed by what he did. This response was not yet true faith. True faith trusts in who Jesus is, not only in the signs and wonders he performs.Read the comment
