Context of James 5:6
4For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 5You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter. You have condemned and killed innocent people, who do not resist you. 7Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. 8You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you - Several by , the just one, understand Jesus Christ, who is so called, Acts 3:14; Acts 7:52; Acts 22:14; but the structure of the sentence, and the connection in which it stands, seem to require that we should consider this as applying to the just or righteous in general, who were persecuted and murdered by those oppressive rich men; and their death was the consequence of their dragging…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Ye have condemned and killed the just - ̀ ́ ton dikaion- “the just one,” or “the just man” - for the word used is in the singular number. This may either refer to the condemnation and crucifixion of Christ - meaning that their conduct towards his people had been similar to the treatment of the Saviour, and was in fact a condemnation and crucifixion of him afresh; or, that by their rejection of him in order to live in sin, they in fact condemned him and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6Murdered the righteous (or killed the Righteous One): Here, this phrase probably refers to innocent people like the oppressed workers mentioned in this paragraph, rather than to Jesus (compare Acts 3:14; 7:52).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. Ye have condemned ... the just--The Greek aorist expresses, "Ye are accustomed to condemn ... the just." Their condemnation of Christ, "the Just," is foremost in James' mind. But all the innocent blood shed, and to be shed, is included, the Holy Spirit comprehending James himself, called "the Just," who was slain in a tumult. See my Introduction. This gives a peculiar appropriateness to the expression in this verse, the same "as the righteous (just)…Read the comment
