Context of Acts 18:3
1Then Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2There he became acquainted with a Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently arrived from Italy with his wife, Priscilla. They had left Italy when Claudius Caesar deported all Jews from Rome. Paul lived and worked with them, for they were tentmakers just as he was. 4Each Sabbath found Paul at the synagogue, trying to convince the Jews and Greeks alike. 5And after Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul spent all his time preaching the word. He testified to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.

Commentaries on Acts 18:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3He abode with them, and wrought - Bp. Pearce observes that it was a custom among the Jews, even of such as had a better education than ordinary, which was Paul's case, Acts 22:3, to learn a trade, that, wherever they were, they might provide for themselves in case of necessity. And though Paul, in some cases, lived on the bounty of his converts, yet he chose not to do so at Ephesus, Acts 20:34; nor at Corinth or other places, 1 Corinthians 4:12; 2…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3The same craft - Of the same trade or occupation. And wrought - And worked at that occupation. Why he did it the historian does not affirm; but it seems pretty evident that it was because he had no other means of maintenance. He also labored for his own support in Ephesus Acts 20:34 and at Thessalonica, 2 Thessalonians 3:9-10. The apostle was not ashamed of honest industry for a livelihood; nor did he deem it any disparagement that a minister of the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3The Roman historian Suetonius mentions that the emperor Claudius Caesar ordered all Jews to leave Rome around AD 49 (Life of Claudius 25). Aquila and Priscilla were a remarkable husband and wife team in the early church. They worked as tentmakers, as did Paul. Paul probably lived and worked with Aquila and Priscilla during his time in Corinth (Acts 18:11; see Romans 16:3–4; 1 Corinthians 16:19). Paul had probably learned tentmaking when he was young. It…Read the comment

Such a city was a noble field for…Read the comment
