Context of Acts 17:10
8The people of the city, as well as the city council, were thrown into turmoil by these reports. 9So the officials forced Jason and the other believers to post bond, and then they released them. That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. 12As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas - Compare Acts 9:25. They did this for their safety. Yet this was not done until the gospel had taken deep root in Thessalonica. Having preached there, and laid the foundation of a church; having thus accomplished the purpose for which they went there, they prepared to leave the city. Unto Berea - This was a city of Macedonia, near Mount Cithanes. “Bercea is on the eastern slope of the Olympian range…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-15Verses 10-15 The Jews in Berea applied seriously to the study of the word preached unto them. They not only heard Paul preach on the sabbath, but daily searched the Scriptures, and compared what they read with the facts related to them. The doctrine of Christ does not fear inquiry; advocates for his cause desire no more than that people will fully and fairly examine whether things are so or not. Those are truly noble, and likely to be more and more so…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-12Because of strong opposition in Thessalonica, the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea, about 80.5 kilometers (50 miles) west of Thessalonica. They had a better reception in Berea than in Thessalonica. Many Jews and prominent Greek women and men became Christians. The Bereans were good examples because they were open-minded, eager to learn, good listeners, thoughtful, and paid attention to the teachings of Scripture. Their resulting faith had a strong…Read the comment
