Context of Acts 13:14
12When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord. 13Paul and his companions then left Paphos by ship for Pamphylia, landing at the port town of Perga. There John Mark left them and returned to Jerusalem. But Paul and Barnabas traveled inland to Antioch of Pisidia. On the Sabbath they went to the synagogue for the services. 15After the usual readings from the books of Moses and the prophets, those in charge of the service sent them this message: “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, come and give it.” 16So Paul stood, lifted his hand to quiet them, and started speaking. “Men of Israel,” he said, “and you God-fearing Gentiles, listen to me.

Commentaries on Acts 13:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14They came to Antioch in Pisidia - This place is mentioned thus to distinguish it from Antioch in Syria, with which it had nothing in common but the name. There were several cities and towns in various districts of these countries called Antioch: some have reckoned up not less than twelve. Pisidia, in which this was situated, was a province of Asia Minor, near to Pamphylia, having Phrygia on the north, and Pamphylia on the south. The position of all these…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14They came to Antioch in Pisidia - Pisidia was a province of Asia Minor, and was situated north of Pamphylia. Antioch was not in Pisidia, but within the limits of Phrygia; but it belonged to Pisadia, and was called Antioch of Pisidia to distinguish it from Antioch in Syria - Pliny, Nat. Hist., 5,27; Strabo, 12, p. 577 (Kuinoel; Robinson‘s Calmet). The city was built by Seleucus, the founder of the Antioch in Syria, and was called after the name of his…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-31Verses 14-31 When we come together to worship God, we must do it, not only by prayer and praise, but by the reading and hearing of the word of God. The bare reading of the Scriptures in public assemblies is not enough; they should be expounded, and the people exhorted out of them. This is helping people in doing that which is necessary to make the word profitable, to apply it to themselves. Every thing is touched upon in this sermon, which might best…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14Paul and Barnabas traveled inland to the high country and reached Pisidian Antioch. This Antioch was in the Roman province of Galatia in Asia Minor. This city is not the same one as the city of Antioch in Syria. As usual, the apostles began their work at the synagogue (see study note on 9:2; compare 13:5; 14:1; 17:1, 2, 10, 17; 18:4, 19; 19:8).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. departed from Perga--apparently without making any stay or doing any work: compare the different language of Ac 14:25, and see immediately below. came to Antioch in Pisidia--usually so called, to distinguish it from Antioch in Syria, from which they had started, though it actually lies in Phrygia, and almost due north from Perga. It was a long journey, and as it lay almost entirely through rugged mountain passes, while "rivers burst out at the base of…Read the comment
