Context of Matthew 22:30

28Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” 29Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. 31But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-33Verses 23-33 The doctrines of Christ displeased the infidel Sadducees, as well as the Pharisees and Herodians. He carried the great truths of the resurrection and a future state, further than they had yet been reveled. There is no arguing from the state of things in this world, as to what will take place hereafter. Let truth be set in a clear light, and it appears in full strength. Having thus silenced them, our Lord proceeded to show the truth of the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30like the angels in heaven: Jesus was not teaching that people will be without gender in heaven. Nor was he criticizing God's order of marriage and sexuality. Instead, he was confirming that God will transform people into a glorious new existence (see 1 Corinthians 15:35–49; 2 Corinthians 5:1–5). In this new existence, parts of the current world, like marriage, will not be present.Read the comment
