Context of Mark 13:22
20“If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. 24“But in those days, following that distress, “ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light;

Promises of power to persevere, and cautions against falling away, well agree with each other. But the more we consider these things, the more we shall see…Read the comment

In this passage, these false leaders are connected with the events leading up to AD 70. In 13:5–6, however, they are connected more generally with ongoing events in history. Along with false messiahs, false prophets would appear and perform signs and wonders (13:22). Jesus warned his followers not to believe such claims. When the Messiah comes from heaven, "every eye will see…Read the comment
