Context of John 19:15
13When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). 14It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews. But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered. 16Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15The final words of the priests, “We have no king but Caesar,” are a contradiction of the Old Testament belief that God was Israel’s king (compare Judges 8:23; 1 Samuel 8:7; 10:19). Jerusalem and its religious leaders were killing their true king while honoring Caesar, the pagan king of Rome (John 18:37).Read the comment
