Context of Romans 9:26
24even us, whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? 25As he also says in Hosea: “I will call those who were not my people, ‘My people,’ and I will call her who was unloved, ‘My beloved.’” “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’” 27And Isaiah cries out on behalf of Israel, “Though the number of the children of Israel are as the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved, 28for the Lord will execute his sentence on the earth completely and quickly.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26And it shall come to pass, etc. - These quotations are taken out of Hosea, Hosea 1:10, where (immediately after God had rejected the ten tribes, or kingdom of Israel, Hosea 1:9, then saith God, Call his name Lo-ammi; for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God), he adds, yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered: and it shall come to pass, that in the place in which it was said…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-29Verses 25-29 The rejecting of the Jews, and the taking in the Gentiles, were foretold in the Old Testament. It tends very much to the clearing of a truth, to observe how the Scripture is fulfilled in it. It is a wonder of Divine power and mercy that there are any saved: for even those left to be a seed, if God had dealt with them according to their sins, had perished with the rest. This great truth this Scripture teaches us. Even among the vast number of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 24-26God was free to choose some people from among the Jews to have a true spiritual relationship with him. In the same way, he was free to choose some people from among the Gentiles (non-Jewish people) to be saved. God was not limited by ethnic background. Paul supports this point by quoting the prophet Hosea. Hosea spoke about the ten northern tribes of Israel. These tribes had rebelled against God and were under his judgment. Even so, Hosea said that God…Read the comment

And--another quotation from Ho 1:10. it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children--"called sons" of the living God--The expression, "in the place where ... there," seems designed only to give greater emphasis to the gracious change here announced, from divine exclusion to divine admission to the privileges of the people of God.Read the comment
- Calvin’s Commentaries · v. 2626. I will call them my people which are not a people This is said with respect to the divorce, which God had already made with the people, by depriving them of all honor, so that they did not excel other nations. Though they indeed, whom God in his eternal counsel has destined as sons to himself, are perpetually his sons, yet Scripture in many parts counts none to be God’s children but those the election of whom has been proved by their calling: and…Read the comment
