Context of Luke 24:13
11But these words seemed like pure nonsense to them, and they did not believe them. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and saw only the strips of linen cloth; then he went home, wondering what had happened. Now that very day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14They were talking to each other about all the things that had happened. 15While they were talking and debating these things, Jesus himself approached and began to accompany them

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Behold, two of them - This long and interesting account is not mentioned by Matthew nor John, and is only glanced at by Mark, Mark 16:12, Mark 16:13. One of these disciples was Cleopas, Luke 24:18, and the other is supposed by many learned men, both ancient and modern, to have been Luke himself. See the sketch of his life prefixed to these notes. Some of the ancient versions have called the other disciple Ammaus and Ammaon, reading the verse thus: Behold…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13“Two of them.” Two of the disciples. The name of one of them was “Cleopas,” Luke 24:18. Many have supposed that the other was Luke, and that he omitted his own name from modesty. Others have supposed that it was Peter. See Luke 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:5. There is no evidence to guide us here. Dr. Lightfoot has shown that “Cleopas” is the same name as “Alpheus,” who was the father of the apostle James, Matthew 10:3. Emmaus - In regard to the locality of…Read the comment

It well becomes the disciples of Christ to talk together of his death and resurrection; thus they may improve one another's knowledge, refresh one another's memory, and stir up each other's devout affections. And where but two together are well employed in work of that kind, he will come to them, and make a third. Those who seek…Read the comment

Nothing else is known of Cleopas or the other disciple, who might have been his wife (24:18). They were probably returning from celebrating the Passover feast in Jerusalem.Read the comment
