Context of John 17:7
5And now, Father, glorify me at your side with the glory I had with you before the world was created. 6“I have revealed your name to the men you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have obeyed your word. Now they understand that everything you have given me comes from you, 8because I have given them the words you have given me. They accepted them and really understand that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9I am praying on behalf of them. I am not praying on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those you have given me, because they belong to you.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-10Verses 6-10 Christ prays for those that are his. Thou gavest them me, as sheep to the shepherd, to be kept; as a patient to the physician, to be cured; as children to a tutor, to be taught: thus he will deliver up his charge. It is a great satisfaction to us, in our reliance upon Christ, that he, all he is and has, and all he said and did, all he is doing and will do, are of God. Christ offered this prayer for his people alone as believers; not for the…Read the comment

He then expressed concerns for the church and its future (17:9–26).Read the comment
