Context of Hebrews 9:12
10They served only for matters of food and drink and various washings; they are external regulations imposed until the new order came. 11But now Christ has come as the high priest of the good things to come. He passed through the greater and more perfect tent not made with hands, that is, not of this creation, and he entered once for all into the most holy place not by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood, and so he himself secured eternal redemption. 13For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow sprinkled on those who are defiled consecrated them and provided ritual purity, 14how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our consciences from dead works to worship the living God.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12But by his own blood - Here the redemption of man is attributed to the blood of Christ; and this blood is stated to be shed in a sacrificial way, precisely as the blood of bulls, goats and calves was shed under the law. Once - Once for all, , in opposition to the annual entering of the high priest into the holiest, with the blood of the annual victim. The holy place - Or sanctuary, ̔ͅ, signifies heaven, into which Jesus entered with his own blood, as the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12Neither by the blood of goats and calves - The Jewish sacrifice consisted of the shedding of the blood of animals. On the great day of the atonement the high priest took with him into the most holy place: (1)the blood of a young bullock Leviticus 16:3, Leviticus 16:11, which is here called the blood of a “calf,” which he offered for his own sin; and, (2)the blood of a goat, as a sin-offering for others; Leviticus 16:9, Leviticus 16:15. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-14Verses 11-14 All good things past, present, and to come, were and are founded upon the priestly office of Christ, and come to us from thence. Our High Priest entered into heaven once for all, and has obtained eternal redemption. The Holy Ghost further signified and showed that the Old Testament sacrifices only freed the outward man from ceremonial uncleanness, and fitted him for some outward privileges. What gave such power to the blood of Christ? It was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12Christ's offering is better because he used his own blood, not the blood of goats and calves (see Leviticus 16:3–5). Christ's offering is better because he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time. Unlike the sacrifices in the old covenant, which had to be repeated every year (Hebrews 10:1), the sacrificial death of Jesus was needed only once and secured our redemption forever.Read the comment
