Context of Acts 8:27
25So after Peter and John had solemnly testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, proclaiming the good news to many Samaritan villages as they went. 26Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go south on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert road.) So he got up and went. There he met an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28and was returning home, sitting in his chariot, reading the prophet Isaiah. 29Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.”

Commentaries on Acts 8:27
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27A man of Ethiopia - should be translated an Ethiopian, for the reasons given on Acts 7:2. An eunuch - See this word interpreted, on Matthew 19:12; (note). The term eunuch was given to persons in authority at court, to whom its literal meaning did not apply. Potiphar was probably an eunuch only as to his office; for he was a married man. See Genesis 37:36; Genesis 39:1. And it is likely that this Ethiopian was of the same sort. Of great authority - Ϛ, A…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27A man of Ethiopia - Gaza was near the confines between Palestine and Egypt. It was in the direct road from Jerusalem to Egypt. “Ethiopia” was one of the great kingdoms of Africa, part of which is now called Abyssinia. It is frequently mentioned in Scripture under the name of “Cush.” But “Cush” comprehended a much larger region, including the southern part of Arabia, and even sometimes the countries adjacent to the Tigris and Euphrates. Ethiopia proper lay…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-40Verses 26-40 Philip was directed to go to a desert. Sometimes God opens a door of opportunity to his ministers in very unlikely places. We should study to do good to those we come into company with by travelling. We should not be so shy of all strangers as some affect to be. As to those of whom we know nothing else, we know this, that they have souls. It is wisdom for men of business to redeem time for holy duties; to fill up every minute with something…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27In the ancient world, a eunuch was a royal official. Some eunuchs had been physically altered and could not have children, while others held the title because of their role in the royal court (see 2 Kings 9:30–32; Esther 1:10; 2:3, 14–15, 21; 4:4–5). Many Jews looked down on eunuchs. Eunuchs could not have children, so they could not pass on the covenant family line (God’s people through descendants). The law of Moses also excluded men with damaged…Read the comment
