Context of Revelation 6:15

13The stars fell from the sky to the earth like figs dropping from a fig tree when it is shaken by a strong wind. 14The sky vanished like a scroll being rolled up. Every mountain and island was moved from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the important people, the generals, the rich, the powerful, and all the slaves and free people hid themselves in caves and among the rocks in the mountains. 16They said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the anger of the lamb, 17because the frightening day of their anger has come, and who is able to endure it?”

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15The kings of the earth, etc. - All the secular powers who had endeavored to support the pagan worship by authority, influence, riches, political wisdom, and military skill; with every bondman - all slaves, who were in life and limb addicted to their masters or owners. And every freeman - Those who had been manumitted, commonly called freedmen, and who were attached, through gratitude, to the families of their liberators. All hid themselves - were…Read the comment

And, lo, there was a great earthquake - Before endeavoring to ascertain to what the sixth seal was designed to refer, it is proper, as in the previous cases, to furnish a particular explanation of the meaning of the symbols. All the symbols represented in the opening of this seal denote consternation, commotion, changes; but still they are all…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-17Verses 12-17 When the sixth seal was opened, there was a great earthquake. The foundations of churches and states would be terribly shaken. Such bold figurative descriptions of great changes abound in the prophecies of Scripture; for these events are emblems, and declare the end of the world and the day of judgment. Dread and terror would seize on all sorts of men. Neither grandeur, riches, valour, nor strength, can support men at that time. They would be…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-17every slave and free man hid: When God’s judgment comes, people who are not redeemed will be terrified. They will try to hide in a safe place, but they will not succeed (Isaiah 2:19–21; Ezekiel 38:20; Hosea 10:8; Luke 23:30). The prophets often warned that this great day would bring wrath and judgment (Isaiah 13:6–11; Joel 1:15; Amos 5:18; Zephaniah 1:14–15). The key question about God’s judgment is, who can survive? (Malachi 3:2). God’s children will be…Read the comment
