Context of Job 34:19
17Should anyone who hates justice be allowed to govern? Will you condemn the one who is righteous and mighty? 18Should anyone ⌞even⌟ say to a king, ‘You good-for-nothing scoundrel!’ or to nobles, ‘You wicked people!’ The one who is righteous and mighty does not grant special favors to princes or prefer important people over poor people because his hands made them all. 20They die suddenly in the middle of the night. People have seizures and pass away. Mighty people are taken away but not by human hands. 21God’s eyes are on a person’s ways. He sees all his steps.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19That accepteth not - If it be utterly improper to speak against a king or civil governor, how much more so to speak disrespectfully of God, who is not influenced by human caprices or considerations, and who regards the rich and the poor alike, being equally his creatures, and equally dependent on his providence and mercy for their support and salvation.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19How much less to him that accepteth not the person of princes - To accept the person of anyone is to treat him with special favor on account of his rank, his wealth, or from favoritism and partiality. This God often disclaims in respect to himself; (compare Galatians 2:6; Acts 10:34; 2 Chronicles 19:7; Romans 2:11; Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 3:25), and solemnly forbids it in others; see James 2:1, James 2:3, James 2:9; Leviticus 19:15; Deuteronomy 1:17…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-30Verses 16-30 Elihu appeals directly to Job himself. Could he suppose that God was like those earthly princes, who hate right, who are unfit to rule, and prove the scourges of mankind? It is daring presumption to condemn God's proceedings, as Job had done by his discontents. Elihu suggests divers considerations to Job, to produce in him high thoughts of God, and so to persuade him to submit. Job had often wished to plead his cause before God. Elihu asks…Read the comment
