Context of Matthew 17:2
1After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John (the brother of James) and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone. Jesus’ appearance changed in front of them. His face became as bright as the sun and his clothes as white as light. 3Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them and were talking with Jesus. 4Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good that we’re here. If you want, I’ll put up three tents here—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2And was transfigured before them - The word “transfigure” means to change the appearance or form. It does not denote the change of the substance of a thing, but simply of its appearance. It puts on a new aspect. What this change was we are expressly told. 1. His face shone as the sun; that is, with a special brightness. A similar appearance is described respecting Moses when he came down from the mount, Exodus 34:29-30.
