Context of Matthew 17:2
1And after six days Jesus takes with [him] Peter, and James, and John his brother, and brings them up into a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them. And his face shone as the sun, and his garments became white as the light; 3and lo, Moses and Elias appeared to them talking with him. 4And Peter answering said to Jesus, Lord, it is good we should be here. If thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles: for thee one, and for Moses one, and one for Elias.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2And was transfigured before them - The word “transfigure” means to change the appearance or form. It does not denote the change of the substance of a thing, but simply of its appearance. It puts on a new aspect. What this change was we are expressly told. 1. His face shone as the sun; that is, with a special brightness. A similar appearance is described respecting Moses when he came down from the mount, Exodus 34:29-30. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2He was transfigured: In this moment, the inner and divine nature of Jesus, normally hidden, was now revealed. The three disciples were given a glimpse of his glory (see Exodus 34:29–35; Psalm 104:2; 2 Corinthians 3:12–18; Revelation 1:16).
