Context of Matthew 14:25
23After sending the people away, he went up a mountain to pray by himself. When evening came, he was there alone. 24The boat, now hundreds of yards from shore, was being thrown around by the waves because it was going against the wind. Between three and six o’clock in the morning, he came to them. He was walking on the sea. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. They said, “It’s a ghost!” and began to scream because they were afraid. 27Immediately, Jesus said, “Calm down! It’s me. Don’t be afraid!”

This division the Romans had introduced in Judea, as also the custom of dividing the day into twelve hours: see John 11:9. The first watch began at six o'clock in the evening…Read the comment

In the time of our Saviour they divided the night into four watches, the fourth having been introduced by the Romans. These watches consisted of three hours each. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-33Verses 22-33 Those are not Christ's followers who cannot enjoy being alone with God and their own hearts. It is good, upon special occasions, and when we find our hearts enlarged, to continue long in secret prayer, and in pouring out our hearts before the Lord. It is no new thing for Christ's disciples to meet with storms in the way of duty, but he thereby shows himself with the more grace to them and for them. He can take what way he pleases to save his…Read the comment
