Context of Luke 9:22
20He asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, whom God has sent.” 21He ordered them not to tell this to anyone. Jesus said that the Son of Man would have to suffer a lot. He would be rejected by the leaders, the chief priests, and the experts in Moses’ Teachings. He would be killed, but on the third day he would come back to life. 23He said to all of them, “Those who want to come with me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses every day, and follow me. 24Those who want to save their lives will lose them. But those who lose their lives for me will save them.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-27Verses 18-27 It is an unspeakable comfort that our Lord Jesus is God's Anointed; this signifies that he was both appointed to be the Messiah, and qualified for it. Jesus discourses concerning his own sufferings and death. And so far must his disciples be from thinking how to prevent his sufferings, that they must prepare for their own. We often meet with crosses in the way of duty; and though we must not pull them upon our own heads, yet, when they are…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22must suffer many things: This was the first prophecy of Jesus about his coming death in Jerusalem (see 9:44; 17:25; 18:31–34). Jesus would fulfill the prophecies in Isaiah 52:13–53:12. These prophecies describe the Lord's servant (the Messiah) who offers himself to save God's people. These events were part of God's purpose and plan. Despite opposition from human beings and from the spiritual forces of Satan, God works through the actions of human beings…Read the comment
