Context of Luke 9:22
20‘But what do you think?’ Jesus then asked them. ‘Who do you say that I am?’ Peter replied, ‘You are the Messiah. God has sent you.’ 21Jesus spoke very strongly to them. He told them that they must not tell anyone about this. Then he said, ‘The Son of Man will have to suffer in many ways. The important Jews, the leaders of the priests and the teachers of God's Law will turn against him. People will kill him, but three days later God will cause him to become alive again.’ 23Then Jesus said to all the people that were there, ‘A person who wants to be my disciple must not think about himself. He must decide that his own life is not important. Every day he must be like someone who carries his own cross to go and die. Then he may come with me as my disciple. 24Whoever wants to keep his own life safe will lose it. But whoever gives his life to serve me will have true life.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-27Verses 18-27 It is an unspeakable comfort that our Lord Jesus is God's Anointed; this signifies that he was both appointed to be the Messiah, and qualified for it. Jesus discourses concerning his own sufferings and death. And so far must his disciples be from thinking how to prevent his sufferings, that they must prepare for their own. We often meet with crosses in the way of duty; and though we must not pull them upon our own heads, yet, when they are…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22must suffer many things: This was the first prophecy of Jesus about his coming death in Jerusalem (see 9:44; 17:25; 18:31–34). Jesus would fulfill the prophecies in Isaiah 52:13–53:12. These prophecies describe the Lord's servant (the Messiah) who offers himself to save God's people. These events were part of God's purpose and plan. Despite opposition from human beings and from the spiritual forces of Satan, God works through the actions of human beings…Read the comment
