Context of Luke 5:38
36He also used these illustrations: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new coat to patch an old coat. Otherwise, the new cloth will tear the old. Besides, the patch from the new will not match the old. 37People don’t pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the new wine will make the skins burst. The wine will run out, and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine is to be poured into fresh skins. 39“No one who has been drinking old wine wants new wine. He says, ‘The old wine is better!’ ”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33-39Verses 33-39 See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 9:14-17. Luke 5:39 Having drunk old wine - Wine increases its strength and flavor, and its mildness and mellowness, by age, and the old is therefore preferable. They who had tasted such mild and mellow wine would not readily drink the comparatively sour and astringent juice of the grape as it came from the press. The meaning of this proverb in this place seems to be this: You Pharisees…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-39Verses 27-39 It was a wonder of Christ's grace, that he would call a publican to be his disciple and follower. It was a wonder of his grace, that the call was made so effectual. It was a wonder of his grace, that he came to call sinners to repentance, and to assure them of pardon. It was a wonder of his grace, that he so patiently bore the contradiction of sinners against himself and his disciples. It was a wonder of his grace, that he fixed the services…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36-38a new garment … new wine: New cloth shrinks when it is washed and can tear old cloth. New wine expands as it ferments and can burst old, brittle wineskins. In both cases, both the old and the new are ruined. These examples show that the old and the new do not work well together. Jesus did not come to patch up the old covenant, but to bring a new one. The kingdom of God brings a new way of thinking and living.Read the comment
