Context of Acts 27:38
36Everyone was encouraged and had something to eat. 37(There were 276 of us on the ship.) After the people had eaten all they wanted, they lightened the ship by dumping the wheat into the sea. 39In the morning they couldn’t recognize the land, but they could see a bay with a beach. So they decided to try to run the ship ashore. 40They cut the anchors free and left them in the sea. At the same time they untied the ropes that held the steering oars. Then they raised the top sail to catch the wind and steered the ship to the shore.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-38Verses 30-38 God, who appointed the end, that they should be saved, appointed the means, that they should be saved by the help of these shipmen. Duty is ours, events are God's; we do not trust God, but tempt him, when we say we put ourselves under his protection, if we do not use proper means, such as are within our power, for our safety. But how selfish are men in general, often even ready to seek their own safety by the destruction of others! Happy…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-44The graphic language describing sailing in the story of Paul's journey to Rome provides one of the best accounts of an ancient sea journey. This is the last "we" section in Acts (see also 16:10–17; 20:5–15; 21:1–18). During Paul's two years of imprisonment, Luke probably researched his gospel throughout Judea and Galilee. Here, as part of Paul's sailing group, he had a personal witness of the dangers at sea.Read the comment
