Context of Acts 27:38
36They were all encouraged and took some food themselves. 37In all, there were 276 of us on board. After the men had eaten their fill, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea. 39When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they sighted a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could. 40Cutting away the anchors, they left them in the sea as they loosened the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and made for the beach.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-38Verses 30-38 God, who appointed the end, that they should be saved, appointed the means, that they should be saved by the help of these shipmen. Duty is ours, events are God's; we do not trust God, but tempt him, when we say we put ourselves under his protection, if we do not use proper means, such as are within our power, for our safety. But how selfish are men in general, often even ready to seek their own safety by the destruction of others! Happy…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-44The graphic language describing sailing in the story of Paul's journey to Rome provides one of the best accounts of an ancient sea journey. This is the last "we" section in Acts (see also 16:10–17; 20:5–15; 21:1–18). During Paul's two years of imprisonment, Luke probably researched his gospel throughout Judea and Galilee. Here, as part of Paul's sailing group, he had a personal witness of the dangers at sea.Read the comment
