Context of Acts 10:44

42He ordered us to warn the people, ‘God has appointed Jesus to judge the living and the dead.’ 43In addition, all the prophets testify that people who believe in the one named Jesus receive forgiveness for their sins through him.” While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit came to everyone who heard his message. 45All the believers who were circumcised and who had come with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured on people who were not Jewish. 46They heard these non-Jewish people speaking in other languages and praising God. Then Peter said,

Commentaries on Acts 10:44

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 44While Peter yet spake - It in not very likely that the words recorded by St. Luke are all that the apostle spoke on this occasion; but, while he continued to discourse with them on this subject, the Holy Ghost fell on all them that heard the word; and his descent was known by their being enabled to speak with different kinds of tongues. In what manner this gift was bestowed we cannot tell; probably it was in the same way in which it had been given on the…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44The Holy Ghost fell … - Endowing them with the power of speaking with other tongues, Acts 10:46. Of this the apostle Peter makes much in his argument in Acts 11:17. By this, God showed that the Gentiles were to be admitted to the same privileges with the Jews, and to the blessings of salvation in the same manner. Compare Acts 2:1-4. • Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 44-48Verses 44-48 The Holy Ghost fell upon others after they were baptized, to confirm them in the faith; but upon these Gentiles before they were baptized, to show that God does not confine himself to outward signs. The Holy Ghost fell upon those who were neither circumcised nor baptized; it is the Spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing. They magnified God, and spake of Christ and the benefits of redemption. Whatever gift we are endued with, we…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44-48On the day of Pentecost, Peter told the people that if they stopped sinning, repented, asked forgiveness from God, and received baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, they would "receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (2:38; see also 19:1–7). As Cornelius and his household listened to Peter's message, they received the Holy Spirit just like the Jews had earlier. This event confirmed again that God did not favor one group over another (10:34–35). This event is…Read the comment
