Context of Mark 1:23

21And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24"What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God." 25But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!"

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-28Verses 23-28 The devil is an unclean spirit, because he has lost all the purity of his nature, because he acts in direct opposition to the Holy Spirit of God, and by his suggestions defiles the spirits of men. There are many in our assemblies who quietly attend under merely formal teachers; but if the Lord come with faithful ministers and holy doctrine, and by his convincing Spirit, they are ready to say, like this man, What have we to do with thee, Jesus…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-24The demon spoke through the man who was possessed by an evil spirit (1:24). In the Gospels, demons are often associated with disease (9:17, 27; Matthew 17:15) and self-destructive behavior (Mark 1:26; 5:2–5; 9:17–18, 20–22). Demons know who Jesus is (1:34). They constantly identify him as the Holy One of God (for similar phrases see 3:11; 5:7). In saying us, the evil spirit spoke on behalf of all demons. It recognized that Jesus has full authority and…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2323. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit--literally, "in an unclean spirit"--that is, so entirely under demoniacal power that his personality was sunk for the time in that of the spirit.
