Context of Luke 7:3

1After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy to have you do this for him, 5for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue."

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3Elders of the Jews - These were either magistrates in the place, or the elders of the synagogue which the centurion had built, Luke 7:5. He sent these, probably, because he was afraid to come to Christ himself, not being a Jew, either by nation or religion. In the parallel place in Matthew, he is represented as coming to Christ himself; but it is a usual form of speech in all nations, to attribute the act to a person which is done not by himself, but by…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3Jewish elders were leaders in the Jewish community. Matthew’s shorter account says that the centurion approached Jesus himself (Matthew 8:5–13). Luke gives more details and explains that Jewish elders, and later the centurion’s friends, spoke to Jesus for him.Read the comment
