Context of Romans 7:17
15I do not understand the things that I do. I do not do the good things that I want to do. Instead, I do the things that I hate to do. 16But I do not want to do those wrong things. So I am agreeing that God's Law is good. So it is not really I myself who am doing those wrong things. Instead, sin has power in my life. It is sin that causes me to do wrong things. 18I know that there is nothing good in me. I am weak and human. I want to do what is good. But I am unable to do it. 19I do not do the good things that I want to do. Instead, I continue to do the bad things that I do not want to do.

Commentaries on Romans 7:17
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17Now then it is no more I - It is not that I which constitutes reason and conscience, but sin-corrupt and sensual inclinations, that dwelleth in me - that has the entire domination over my reason, darkening my understanding, and perverting my judgment; for which there is condemnation in the law, but no cure. So we find here that there is a principle in the unregenerate man stronger than reason itself; a principle which is, properly speaking, not of the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17It is no more I that do it - This is evidently figurative language, for it is really the man that sins when evil is committed. But the apostle makes a distinction between sin and what he intends by the pronoun “I”. By the former he evidently means his corrupt nature. By the latter he refers to his renewed nature, his Christian principles. He means to say that he does not approve or love it in his present state, but that it is the result of his native…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-17Verses 14-17 Compared with the holy rule of conduct in the law of God, the apostle found himself so very far short of perfection, that he seemed to be carnal; like a man who is sold against his will to a hated master, from whom he cannot set himself at liberty. A real Christian unwillingly serves this hated master, yet cannot shake off the galling chain, till his powerful and gracious Friend above, rescues him. The remaining evil of his heart is a real…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17it is no longer I who do it: Paul is not avoiding responsibility for his sin (see also 7:20). Instead, he explains that he truly wants to do what the law commands. Because of this, something else must be causing him to act in the opposite way. That cause is sin living in him. Paul describes a conflict between what he wants to do and what he actually does.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1717. Now then it is no more I--my renewed self. that do it--"that work it." but sin which dwelleth in me--that principle of sin that still has its abode in me. To explain this and the following statements, as many do (even Bengel and Tholuck), of the sins of unrenewed men against their better convictions, is to do painful violence to the apostle's language, and to affirm of the unregenerate what is untrue. That coexistence and mutual hostility of "flesh"…Read the comment
