Context of Romans 15:31
29When I visit you, I know that Christ will bless us very much while we are together. 30My Christian friends, please pray for me as I do this difficult work. Together we belong to our Lord Jesus Christ. God's Spirit has given us love for each other. So I ask you to help me and to pray with me. Pray that God will keep me safe from those people in Judea who have refused to believe in Jesus. Pray also that God's people at Jerusalem will happily accept the gift that I am taking to them. 32If God agrees, I will then be able to come to you, and we will be happy together. I will enjoy having some rest while I stay there with you. 33I pray that God will give you peace in your minds. I pray that he will be with all of you and help you. Amen.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 31That I may be delivered from them that do not believe - He knew that his countrymen, who had not received the Gospel, lay in wait for his life; and, no doubt, they thought they should do God service by destroying him, not only as an apostate, in their apprehension, from the Jewish religion, but as one who was labouring to subvert and entirely destroy it. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 31That I may be - The unbelieving Jews in Judea had been opposed to Paul‘s conversion. They could not forget that he had borne letters of commission from them to persecute the Christians at Damascus. They regarded him as an apostate. They had heard of his success among the Gentiles; and they had been informed that he “taught all the Jews among the Gentiles to forsake the laws of Moses;” Acts 21:21. Hence, the apostle could not but be aware that in…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-33Verses 30-33 Let us learn to value the effectual fervent prayers of the righteous. How careful should we be, lest we forfeit our interest in the love and prayers of God's praying people! If we have experienced the Spirit's love, let us not be wanting in this office of kindness for others. Those that would prevail in prayer, must strive in prayer. Those who beg the prayers of others, must not neglect to pray for themselves. And though Christ knows our…Read the comment
