Context of Revelation 3:14
12Everyone who wins against Satan will be safe in God's house. I will make them like a strong pillar in the temple of my God. They will never leave that place again. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of his city. The name of that city is the new Jerusalem. It will come down from heaven. My God will send it down to the earth. I will also write my new name on those people. 13God's Spirit is speaking to you in the churches. You should understand what the Spirit is saying to you. You have ears, so listen carefully!” ’ ‘Write this to the angel of the church at Laodicea: “This is my message to you. I am the one whose name is ‘Amen’. I faithfully tell people God's true message. Everything that God has created starts with me. 15I know everything that you do. I know that you are neither cold nor hot. It would be better if you were either cold or hot. 16But you are only warm. Because you are neither cold nor hot, I am ready to throw you away completely.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write - See the notes on Revelation 1:20. These things saith the Amen - Referring, as is the case in every epistle, to some attribute of the speaker adapted to impress their minds, or to give special force to what he was about to say to that particular church. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-22Verses 14-22 Laodicea was the last and worst of the seven churches of Asia. Here our Lord Jesus styles himself, "The Amen;" one steady and unchangeable in all his purposes and promises. If religion is worth anything, it is worth every thing. Christ expects men should be in earnest. How many professors of gospel doctrine are neither hot nor cold; except as they are indifferent in needful matters, and hot and fiery in disputes about things of lesser moment!…Read the comment

The people of Laodicea were proud of their independence. After a severe earthquake in AD 60, Laodicea refused help from Rome and rebuilt their city on their own, making it very beautiful (Tacitus, Annals 14.27). Amen: Used as an oath, "Amen" is a promise of truth (Isaiah 65:16). Jesus…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. Laodiceans--The city was in the southwest of Phrygia, on the river Lycus, not far from Colosse, and lying between it and Philadelphia. It was destroyed by an earthquake, A.D. 62, and rebuilt by its wealthy citizens without the help of the state [Tacitus, Annals, 14.27]. This wealth (arising from the excellence of its wools) led to a self-satisfied, lukewarm state in spiritual things, as Re 3:17 describes. See on Col 4:16, on the Epistle which is…Read the comment
