Context of Matthew 7:22
20In the same way, look at the way people live. Then you will know what they are really like. 21Some people say to me, “Master, Master!” But not all of them will come into the kingdom of heaven. Only the people who obey God, my Father in heaven, will come in. They do what he wants them to do. On the day when God judges people, many of them will say, “Master, Master! We used your authority and we spoke a message from you. We used your authority and we sent bad spirits out of people. We used your authority to do many powerful things.” 23But I will say to these people, “I never knew you. You do not obey God. You are bad. So go away from me.” ’ 24Jesus then said, ‘Some people listen to my message and they obey it. Those people are like a wise man who built his house on rock.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22Many will say to me in that day - , in that very day, viz. the day of judgment - have we not prophesied, taught, publicly preached, in thy name; acknowledging thee to be the only Savior, and proclaiming thee as such to others; cast out demons, impure spirits, who had taken possession of the bodies of men; done many miracles, being assisted by supernatural agency to invert even the course of nature, and thus prove the truth of the doctrine we preached?Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-29Verses 21-29 Christ here shows that it will not be enough to own him for our Master, only in word and tongue. It is necessary to our happiness that we believe in Christ, that we repent of sin, that we live a holy life, that we love one another. This is his will, even our sanctification. Let us take heed of resting in outward privileges and doings, lest we deceive ourselves, and perish eternally, as multitudes do, with a lie in our right hand. Let every…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22On that day: The Old Testament concept behind this idea is the "day of the Lord." On this day, God will save the faithful and condemn those who oppress others (Isaiah 13–14; Joel 2:1–32; Zephaniah 1:14–16). In the teachings of Jesus, this day is when everyone will be judged based on how they respond to him (see Matthew 10:15; 11:20–24; 12:36; 24:19–50; 25:13, 31–46; Acts 17:31; Romans 2:16). - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2222. Many will say to me in that day--What day? It is emphatically unnamed. But it is the day to which He had just referred, when men shall "enter" or not enter "into the kingdom of heaven." (See a similar way of speaking of "that day" in 2Ti 1:12; 4:8). Lord, Lord--The reiteration denotes surprise. "What, Lord? How is this? Are we to be disowned?" have we not prophesied--or, "publicly taught." As one of the special gifts of the Spirit in the early Church…Read the comment
