Context of Matthew 28:9
7Then you must go quickly to his disciples. Tell them, “Jesus is alive again, and he is going to Galilee. You must also go there and you will see him.” That is the message that I have brought for you.’ 8So the women went away quickly from the hole in the rock. They were very frightened, but they were also very happy. They ran to tell the disciples the angel's message. At that moment, Jesus met the two women and he said, ‘Hello.’ They went near to him. They held on to his feet and they worshipped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell my disciples to go to Galilee. They will see me there.’ 11The women went to tell the disciples Jesus' message. At the same time, some of the soldiers who had watched the rock also went into the city. The soldiers told the leaders of the priests everything that had happened at the rock.

Commentaries on Matthew 28:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9And as they went to tell his disciples - This clause is wanting in the Codex Vatican, and Codex Bezae, and in twenty others, and in most of the versions. The omission is approved by Mill, Bengel, and Schmid. Griesbach leaves it in the text with a note of doubtfulness. It appears to be superfluous. To connect this with the next clause, the particle , and, is obliged to be suppressed in all the translations. I think the verse should begin with, And behold…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And as they went Jesus met them - This was when they left the sepulchre the “second” time. Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene when alone, John 20:14. “Afterward” he appeared to the other women, as related by Matthew. See the accounts of the resurrection harmonized at the end of this chapter. All hail - This is a term of salutation. The word all has been supplied by the translators. It is not in the original. The meaning of the word “hail,” here, is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-10Verses 9-10 God's gracious visits usually meet us in the way of duty; and to those who use what they have for others' benefit, more shall be given. This interview with Christ was unexpected; but Christ was nigh them, and still is nigh us in the word. The salutation speaks the good-will of Christ to man, even since he entered upon his state of exaltation. It is the will of Christ that his people should be a cheerful, joyful people, and his resurrection…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-10The four gospels each emphasize different aspects of the empty tomb and resurrection appearances. Matthew focuses on three things: the reunion of Jesus and his disciples in Galilee, the Jewish leaders' attempt to discredit the resurrection, and the importance of the ressurection for the salvation of the world.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail!--the usual salute, but from the lips of Jesus bearing a higher signification. And they came and held him by the feet--How truly womanly!Read the comment
